RAMALLAH, Saturday, October 24, 2020 (WAFA) – The normalization declaration between Sudan and Israel announced yesterday by the United States was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
The main front-page story in al-Ayyam daily said US President Donald Trump has announced an end to hostilities between Sudan and Israel and their agreement to normalize their economic and commercial relations. It said Egypt’s Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has welcomed the move.
Al-Quds daily had the same headline on this topic even though lower on the page and added that Trump confirmed that five other Arab countries, including Saudi Arabia, are on their way to normalizing relations with Israel.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the Palestinian presidency’s condemnation of this step by Sudan. It also said that the ruling Fatah party has condemned it.
The same paper also highlighted the telephone conversation yesterday between President Mahmoud Abbas and Pope Francis and said that the President thanked the Pope for his position rejecting projects that violate international law.
The top front-page story in al-Quds daily highlighted the Israeli army crackdown on the peaceful Palestinian protests in the occupied territories and said that dozens of Palestinians were injured in these attacks.
Al-Ayyam said Palestinians harvesting their olive crops were also hurt when Israeli settlers attacked them in the West Bank fields.
The situation of Palestinian administrative detainee Maher al-Akhras, who has been on hunger strike for 90 days demanding an end to his unlawful incarceration in Israel, was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies.
Al-Quds said the Israeli occupation forces raided al-Akhras’ room at Kaplan hospital in Israel in order to transfer him back to Ramla prison despite his deteriorating health condition as a result of the long fast.
Coronavirus in Palestine, the region and the world was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies with al-Hayat al-Jadida saying that Azzam al-Ahmad and Ahmad Majdalani, two members of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), have tested positive for the disease.
Al-Ayyam said Saeb Erekat, also a PLO member who also contracted the disease, was still in critical condition in hospital due to the impact of the virus on his lungs.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida had a report about the visit of Shalini Ahlawat, the wife of the Indian Representative to Palestine, Sunil Kumar, to Jalazoun refugee camp in Ramallah, highlighting the humanitarian side of this visit by the wife of a foreign diplomat. It printed a picture of Ahlawat visiting two Palestinian women in the camp.
