Non-Aligned Committee Aims to Stress Palestinian Rights, says Official

RAMALLAH, August 4, 2012 (WAFA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs Riyad Malki said Saturday that a meeting for the Palestine Committee of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) aims to emphasize Palestinian rights, including the right to hold international conferences in Palestine.

He said at a press conference that this meeting, which is scheduled to be held in Ramallah on Sunday, is a historical event and the first of its kind in Palestine.

He said that the meeting aims to support Palestinian efforts to end the Israeli occupation and settlement activities and to support the establishment of a Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Palestine had requested one month ago during a meeting for the NAM foreign ministers held in the Egyptian Red Sea resort city of Sharm el-Sheik to hold a special meeting for the committee in Ramallah.

Foreign ministers and representatives from Egypt, Indonesia, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malaysia, Senegal, Colombia, India, Cuba, Bangladesh and Jordan as a guest represented by Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh will attend the meeting. Algeria, the thirteenth member of the committee, said it will not attend.

Malki said the officials will be flown in a Jordanian helicopter straight from Amman to Ramallah and back the next day to avoid having to go through Israeli crossings since some committee member states do not have diplomatic relations with Israel.

The conference will be headed by Egypt’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Kamel Amr and President Mahmoud Abbas will give a speech about the situation in Palestine at the opening of the meeting.
