Israel Anticipates Quartet Meeting by Announcing Settlement Plans, Says Erekat

RAMALLAH, December 14, 2011 (WAFA) – PLO Executive Committee Member, Saeb Erekat, Wednesday said that Israel anticipates any Quartet meeting by announcing the building of housing units in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, the latest of which are in Efrat settlement near Bethlehem.

Erekat, speaking to Voice of Palestine radio, said the Palestinian position regarding the Quartet’s statement is clear, unlike the Israeli stance that has not been made official yet.

“It is time for the Quartet to stop treating Israel as a state above the law and start prosecuting its government,” said Erekat.

He considered statements by Israeli Minister of Education, Gideon Sa'ar, in which he said that establishing a Palestinian state is hazardous to Israel, as representing the Israeli government’s position that always aims to eliminate any possibility of an independent Palestinian state.
