Noam Chomsky Denied Entry to West Bank

RAMALLAH, May 16, 2010 (WAFA)- Israeli occupation authorities prevented, today, the American writer Noam Chomsky, from entering the West Bank without giving reason to the prevention and forced him to return to Amman.

Chomsky, well-known for his left-wing views and positions of Israel and the triumph of the Palestinian people will deliver a lecture at Birzeit University, and meet with writers and thinkers of Palestinians in Ramallah.

Chomsky arrived this afternoon, to the Karama border crossing, when the occupation authorities conducted an investigation with him. After hours of waiting, an Israeli official told him that he will not be allowed to enter the West Bank, and that Israel would send a letter to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv to explain the reasons for that.

Chairman of the Department of Philosophy and Cultural Studies at Birzeit University Abdul Rahim al-Shaikh said that the prevention of of Chomsky’s entry is a racist measure, done by a racist occupying country which prevents intellectuals from entering Palestine because it discriminates against Palestinians. Chomsky being highly appreciated by Palestinians, just as a son of kin, is Jewish but not holder of an Israeli citizenship. Because his anti-Israel ideas, he has been denied entry to Palestinian land.
