NEW YORK, May 1, 2026 (WAFA) — United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres warned that an additional 45 million people could face the risk of hunger if restrictions on the Strait of Hormuz are not lifted by mid-year.

Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters in New York, Guterres called on all parties to immediately reopen the vital waterway.

He noted that the war involving the United States and Israel on one side and Iran on the other has entered its third month, adding that despite a ceasefire, conditions continue to deteriorate by the hour.

Guterres expressed deep concern over restrictions affecting navigation rights and freedom of movement in the Strait of Hormuz region.

He said the current situation is “choking the global economy,” warning that its effects will be long-lasting and felt worldwide.

Guterres added that even if restrictions are lifted soon, global supply chains would take months to recover.

He stressed that the ongoing situation is likely to drive up prices and slow global economic growth.
