Torture against Palestinians in Israeli Prisons Escalates

BETHLEHEM, November 10, 2008, (WAFA)- Issa Qaraqe’ Head of Prisoners Committee in the Palestinian Legislative Council said, Monday that, “90% of Palestinians in Israeli prisons are tortured in different manners, varying from psychological pressure, to physical torture and blackmailing.

 

He added, in a press release issued, Monday, that torture from which suffer Palestinians in Israeli prisons is escalating, and has become a repetitive phenomenon, which violates all humanitarian laws.

 

Qaraqe’ issued this statement in response to a video screened on the Israeli Television showing some Israeli soldiers harshly torturing a Palestinian prisoner. He explained that the Israeli criminal justice system provides legitimacy to such actions, while prison doctors remain silent about such practices against prisoners suffering from bad health conditions and diseases.

 

He called on the international community to take its responsibility towards this issue, and to end the suffering of Palestinian prisoners behind Israeli bars.
