JENIN, November 9, 2008 (WAFA)- United States (US) Secretary of Foreign Affaires, Condoleezza Rice announced Saturday that the US is increasing its development assistance to the Jenin Governorate, providing more than $14 million in new projects to benefit the people of Jenin.
These projects will be implemented by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) and will include support in areas such as governance and community support, road rehabilitation, rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities, and economic development and revitalization programs.
The USAID will implement seven projects, at a total cost of $14 million. The Agency plans to invest $11 million in rehabilitating the roads from Arabeh intersection to Ya'bad and from Al-Badan to Jaba'a. It will also build a new co-educational elementary school in Jalboon at a cost of $2 million.
Moreover, USAID will rehabilitate and expand water systems in Jenin, providing more access to safe drinking water for its residents $200,000.
USAID will spend $600,000 on several economic development projects, including efforts to recapitalize industrial and agricultural businesses to revitalize and enhance the competitiveness of Jenin businesses, and sponsor the 'Jenin is Back in Business' market to highlight local production, trade, and small enterprises.
Concerning governance and community support, the Agency plans to provide approximately $700,000 to rehabilitate and improve schools, parks, and community centers in and around Jenin in cooperation with local municipalities.
