Indonesian President Urges Asian, African Countries to Broaden Support for Palestine Independence

JAKARTA, July 14, 2008 (WAFA) - Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called on Asian and African countries to broaden the support for the struggle of Palestinian independence and help the Palestinian people achieve their goal in a concrete manner.

President Susilo's statements came at the opening of the Asian-African Conference on Palestine at the State Palace on Monday. Prime Minister Salam Fayyad has participated in the Conference. Over 220 delegates from 55 Asian and African countries and scores of representatives of international bodies were present at the two-day conference in Jakarta.

'Our collective conscience called upon 53 years ago to support the struggle of the Palestinian people. Today our conscience calls upon us again to broaden that support and make it more practical, substantial and durable. We are called upon to help the Palestinian people in a more concrete way,' said Susilo.

He called on the international community to ensure the implementation of the Roadmap to Peace that was formulated by the Quartet in 2003.

'The international community must work together in concert to realize the goal of an independent, viable Palestine state in the very near future. We must ensure a constructive synergy between all peaceful initiatives to help Palestine and promote peace in the Middle East,' said Susilo.
