Egypt Calls Arab FM's Committee for the Execution of Arab Initiative
CAIRO, April 7, 2007 (WAFA) - Egypt Saturday called the Arab foreign ministers' committee for the execution of the Arab peace initiative to convene this month.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit told reporters that the ministry has sent invitations to the 11 members of the committee as well as to the Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa.
The meeting, stated Abul Gheit, would look into efforts for the initiative which saw light in the Beirut Arab summit and revived in the late Riyadh summit.
On promoting the peace plan, the Egyptian official pointed out that several Arab delegations would head to major world capitals and would establish communications with Israel in order to achieve that goal. Meanwhile, the minister warned that Israeli raids on the Gaza Strip would only complicate matters, preventing a peace atmosphere from being established in the region.
Regarding the addition of a neutral country in the Arab peace talks with Israel, Abul Gheit said this step was not on the agenda, indicating that Israel's demands for the initiative to be modified would not be realized.
He revealed that a meeting between the international Quartet and a four party Arab delegation would be held in May, saying the meeting would be attended by US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, The United Nations' Chief Ban Ki-Moon, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
