Newspaper review: Israeli bombing north of Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Sunday, August 18, 2019 (WAFA) – Palestinian Arabic dailies focused today on an Israeli artillery bombing yesterday which targeted a group of Palestinians near the Gaza-Israel border in the north of the Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds quoted an Israeli army spokesman as saying that a group of Palestinian armed men were bombed after they approached the border fence, adding that some of them were killed and many injured.

Al-Ayyam confirmed in its main headline that four Palestinians were killed in the artillery attack.

Al-Quds said three Israelis were injured in a rocket attack on Sderot in southern Israel.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said in its main news item that President Mahmoud Abbas is going to address the UN General Assembly next month.

Al-Ayyam said hardcore Jewish organizations called upon their fans to organize provocative visits to the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Sunday.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), Saeb Erekat, has sent identical letters to the foreign ministers of the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland in which he expressed his regret over these countries’ decisions to halt aid to the UNRWA based on unconfirmed reports of corruption in the UN agency.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli police on Saturday banned a lecture which was supposed to discuss the Israeli policy of home demolitions in the old city of Jerusalem.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar dismissed claims by Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the agenda of her cancelled visit to Palestine.
