Newspapers Review: The Salfit operation and its aftermath, situation in Gaza focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, March 19, 2019 (WAFA) – Two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused on the front page of their issues today on the aftermath of the Salfit/Ariel operation in which a person believed to be a Palestinian shot and killed an Israeli soldier and a settler, while the third daily dedicated its entire front page to the situation in Gaza with Hamas crackdown on protesters demanding better conditions.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam said that the Israeli army continued to make life difficult for the Salfit-area Palestinian villages in the vicinity of the attack by installing metal gates at the entrances to the villages and preventing movement of people for any reason while raiding villages under the pretext of pursuit of the attacker.

Both papers also said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also announced the construction of 840 settlement units in the illegal settlement of Ariel in clear revenge for the attack.

Al-Quds said the army detained the parents of whom it believed has carried out the attack and apparently is preparing to demolish their house as revenge.

At the same time, according to al-Ayyam, settlers attacked Palestinians driving on West Bank roads, causing injuries and damage without the army intervening, and they also set up mobile homes and tents on Palestinian land near Salfit and Qalqilya.

The assault on Fatah member, Atef Abu Seif, in Gaza that left him with injuries was highlighted in the three papers with al-Hayat al-Jadida making it its top and almost only front page story

Al-Hayat al-Jadida accused Hamas militias of attacking him and printed condemnation of the assault by Fatah and others.

It also published stories exposing what it said was Hamas brutal treatment of protesters in Gaza.

In other news, al-Ayyam said an Israeli court froze a decision to evacuate the Sabbagh family from its home in East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. The house was supposed to be handed over to Jewish settlers.

Al-Quds said Jewish fanatic groups have called on their followers to flock to Al-Aqsa Mosque on Thursday in a move that could provoke violence with Palestinians.
