JERUSALEM, June 7, 2018 (WAFA) – Israeli police threw stun grenades on Thursday at Palestinian worshippers at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque, one of Islam’s holiest sites, and detained two young men following days of tension due to provocations by Jewish fanatics protected by police, according to Muslim Waqf officials.
Muslims normally attend prayers at the mosque in large numbers during Ramadan and spend the last 10 days of the holy fast month worshipping around the clock at the Mosque.
However, police continued to allow Jewish fanatics into the Mosque compound during visit hours, in spite of protests by Muslim officials, raising tension among the Muslim worshippers who are usually provoked by the presence of the fanatics at their holy site during Ramadan.
Last week, police attacked and detained 12 worshippers for reading the Quran out loud, a tradition at the Mosque at all times and especially during Ramadan.
Muslim institutions in Jerusalem have warned that Israeli police continues to break agreed rules and procedures for visits to the holy compound by non-Muslims, particularly during Ramadan when visits are usually suspended during the last 10 days of Ramadan.
