Newspaper Review: President’s remarks in Addis Ababa summit focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, January 29, 2018 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused in their Monday issue on remarks made by President Mahmoud Abbas during the 28th ordinary session of the African Union in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

The dailies quoted the President as saying that resuming the peace process “requires the creation of a multilateral mechanism under the umbrella of the United Nations,” and that the United States “will not be able to come up with a just peace solution because it is biased toward Israel.”

The dailies also highlighted statements by King of Jordan, Abdullah II, who reiterated his commitment to establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Al-Ayyam said Israeli forces arrested a Palestinian man outside Itamar illegal settlement, to the east of Nablus, claiming he attempted to infiltrate the settlement.

Al-Quds quoted PLO Secretary General Saeb Erekat saying that recognizing the State of Palestine is the only way to achieve peace in the Middle East.

Al-Ayyam said the Israeli security apparatus warned the United States about the consequences of its decision to scale down subsidies to the UN refugee agency, UNRWA, and the Palestinian Authority.

It said US peace envoy Jason Greenblatt said during a visit to Israeli towns bordering the Gaza Strip that Israel is going to present new plans regarding Gaza during the upcoming donors meeting that is going to discuss aid to the Palestinian Authority.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida said demonstrations took place in multiple areas of the West Bank and Gaza in protest against the UNRWA’s reduction of services to Palestinian refugees as a result of the US decision to cut aid to the agency.

Al-Quds said the Israeli military court at Ofer, near Ramallah, sentenced 13-year-old Razan Abu Sil, from Arroub refugee camp, to 45 days in prison and 3000 shekels fine (app. $900) after she was caught near the Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted Palestine’s ambassador to India saying that the prime minister of India is going to visit Palestine on February 10.

It said Israeli settlers razed Palestinian agricultural land south of Bethlehem.

Al-Ayyam said Gaza’s Hamas-affiliated security barred women from attending a football game in central Gaza.
