Netherlands calls for review of EU-Israel Partnership over suspected violations in Gaza

AMSTERDAM, May 9, 2025 (WAFA) — Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp has called for a reassessment of the European Union’s partnership agreement with Israel, citing "suspected violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza."

In an official statement, Veldkamp announced that the Netherlands will now require thorough reviews of all dual-use goods exports to Israel—items that can serve both civilian and military purposes. The move reflects mounting concern over Israel’s military attacks in Gaza and Syria, as well as escalating settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

In a formal letter to EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, Veldkamp questioned Israel’s adherence to basic humanitarian principles in the distribution of aid in Gaza, namely neutrality, impartiality, and independence.

He also urged a detailed review of Article 2 of the 2000 EU-Israel Association Agreement, which obliges both parties to uphold international law. Until such an evaluation is completed, the Dutch government will suspend its support for renewing the joint action plan between the EU and Israel.
