LONDON, May 9, 2025 (WAFA) - Secretary General at Amnesty International, Agnès Callamard, said the situation in Gaza is beyond tragic.
“The genocide is livestreamed, but governments with some degree of influence keep tiptoeing around the reality, failing to name the genocide and failing to use their power to prevent and respond effectively.”
In a post published on her X account, she added: “There are tools and ways to respond. The EU-Israel Agreement is such an instrument.”
As EU foreign ministers meet, the Netherlands has requested a review of Israel’s compliance with the EU-Israel Association Agreement, highlighting Article 2 – Israel’s obligations under humanitarian law, she noted.
“ALL EU governments must follow suit. They must act. Urgently. Immediately.”
She emphasized that the EU-Israel Association Agreement is a key form of leverage in the hands of the EU.
“They must use it to protect Palestinians still alive in Gaza from extermination.”
