RAMALLAH, January 14, 2018 (WAFA) – The Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) started Sunday evening in Ramallah its 28th meeting and called to urgently discuss the ramifications of the United State recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
President Mahmoud Abbas called for the two-day meeting to lay out a Palestinian strategy to confront the US move on Jerusalem and to discuss as well future relations with Israel after its failure to implement the agreements it signed with the PLO since 1993.
All Palestinian factions are attending the meeting with the exception of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad, who opted to stay away in spite of the seriousness of the issues that are supposed to be discussed. The two movements are not members in the PLO.
President Mahmoud Abbas is expected to present an important detailed speech at the meeting.
Speaking at the opening session, Salim Zanoun, president of the Palestinian National Council (PNC), the highest Palestinian legislative body, called for reconsidering the Palestinian recognition of Israel.
He also called for an overall strategy to face the US decision on Jerusalem and Israeli measures in the occupied city, which the Palestinians insist is going to be the capital of their future independent state.
