RAMALLAH, July 11, 2017 (WAFA) – Dozens of Palestinian women activists Tuesday held a sit-in protest outside the Red Cross office in Ramallah in support of fellow activists recently detained by Israel and other women prisoners in Israeli jails.
The protesters demanded the release of all women prisoners held in Israel, including lawmaker Khalida Jarrar and the head of the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees Khitam Saafin.
Saafin and Jarrar were arrested at their Ramallah homes on July 2.
Saafin received on July 9 a three-month administrative detention order issued by the Israeli military commander of the West Bank. A confirmation hearing is expected to be held at Ofer military court near Ramallah on Wednesday.
Jarrar was released from Israeli detention on June of last year after serving more than a year in prison, including one month in administrative detention. She was elected to the Palestinian parliament in 2006 and had served as head of the prisoners’ committee in the Palestinian Legislative Council.
According to Addameer, the Prisoner Support and Human Rights Association, 56 female Palestinian prisoners are currently being held in Israeli prisons as political prisoners.
