Newspaper Review: Clashes at Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, June 27, 2016 (WAFA) – The clashes that erupted at Al-Aqsa Mosque compound as Israeli forces stormed it to allow settlers and tourists to tout the compound during the last 10 days of Ramadan hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said that Israeli occupation forces and extremists stormed the mosque compound and clashes with Muslim worshippers, detaining a number of worshippers and injuring others.

Al-Quds said Israeli Special Forces stormed the mosque compound and clashes with worshippers, detaining 6 worshippers and injuring 13 others.

Al-Quds said Israel resumed the construction of the separation ]and apartheid[ wall, south of Hebron.

The three dailies said Israel and Turkey reached a deal to normalize ties and the details of the deal would be announced Monday.

Highlighting the exit of the UK from the European Union and expected repercussions on EU’s economy, al-Quds said international markets are holding their breaths in anticipation of a Black Monday.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Arab League Secretary-General Nabil al-Arabi as claiming that UK’s EU exit would destabilize the Middle East. Al-Ayyam highlighted an EU’s intense diplomatic efforts to accelerate UK’s EU exit.

Al-Quds held an exclusive interview with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is scheduled to visit Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories on Tuesday before his terms of office expires in December.

It reported him as stating the solution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is contingent upon the two-state solution and halting Israeli settlement construction as well as demolition of Palestinian houses.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Palestine (the Palestinian Authority) acceded to the Amendments to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. This was covered as the main front page news item in al-Hayat al-Jadida.

They said Israeli forces reportedly detained four Palestinians, including three dentists, for allegedly being involved in the small explosion that wounded an Israeli soldier at Hizama checkpoint in May.

Al-Quds reported Mahmoud Halabiya, whose sons, Samir and Dawood, were detained over their alleged involvement, as refuting Israeli Shabak’s version of events.
