Newspaper Review: Funeral Procession of Palestinian Killed in Qalandiya Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, March 2, 2016 (WAFA)- The funeral procession of 22-year-old Palestinian shot dead by Israeli forces during an overnight raid into Qalandiya refugee camp, north of Jerusalem, hit the front page headlines of Palestinian dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that Iyad Sajadiyya was laid to his rest in Qalandiya.

Elaborating on the fierce clashes in the camp, al-Ayyam reported that a total of 23 Palestinians were shot and injured by Israeli forces and 15 Israeli soldiers were injured in the aftermath of the raid.

Highlighting ongoing Palestinian public teachers to demand better wages and employment rights, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that public teachers organized large-scale sit-in protests across West Bank cities.

The three dailies quoted President Mahmoud Abbas as pledging his commitment to help teachers achieve equity. Abbas was also reported in al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida as pledging to offer teachers all due support and calling on them to immediately return to their work.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam also reported that the Palestinian government and Fatah Central Committee called on teachers to return to their work today. According to al-Ayyam, the government threatened that it would take legal procedures against teachers if they don’t return to work.

Al-Quds and Al-Hayat Al-Jadida reported that the European Union offered €252.5 million in support of Palestinians.

With regard to the French bid to convene an international peace conference to revive deadlocked Palestinian-Israeli peace process, al-Ayyam reported PLO Executive Committee as welcoming French ideas to resume a serious political process.

Abbas was reported in al-Hayat al-Jadida as expressing his hopes that the French bid would be conducive to setting up a political mechanism similar to Iran Nuclear Program.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Israeli occupation authorities allowed Rabbi Yehuda Glick access into Al-Aqsa mosque compound, while they denied Sheikh Ismail Nawahda, the mosque preacher, access inside.

al-Quds and al-Ayyam highlighted the demolition of a Palestinian house in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Silwan.

Al-Quds reported in this regard that several Palestinians were shot and injured as Israeli troops demolished the house.

Al-Ayyam reported that a Palestinian was wounded after being attacked by Israeli settlers near Jerusalem.

Highlighting the inquiry into the killing of former Palestinian prisoner Omar al-Nayef, who died Friday after being found with fatal injuries inside the Palestinian embassy in Bulgaria, al-Hayat al-Jadida reported Head of the Special Commission of Inquiry Taysir Jaradat as saying that the findings of the inquiry would be announced soon.

Highlighting the drastic humanitarian conditions in the blockaded Gaza Strip, al-Quds reported the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) as saying that Gaza has one of the highest unemployment rates worldwide.
