RAMALLAH, February 24, 2016 (WAFA) – The killing of a Palestinian elderly woman following a car-ramming attack by an Israeli settler in the eastern West Bank district of Jericho hit the front page headlines in the dailies on Wednesday.
The three dailies reported that an elderly Palestinian woman was killed and her daughter was injured when they were hit with a settler-driven vehicle in the Jordan Valley area. The elderly woman and her daughter were identified as Zainab Rashaydeh, 60, and Fatima Abed Yasin, 30.
The demolition of the family houses of two Palestinian detainees and the funeral procession of three Palestinians shot dead by Israeli forces in recent weeks also hit the front page headlines in the dailies.
The three dailies reported that Israeli forces demolished the family houses of Mohammad al-Horoub in the Hebron village of Deir Sammit and of Ra’ed Masalmeh in the Hebron village of Taroosa.
It is worth noting that al-Horoub and Masalmeh were detained almost three months ago for their involvement in two separate stabbing and shooting attacks that left several Israeli settlers dead.
The dailies also highlighted in their main front page news items the funeral processions of Omar ‘Amr and Mansour al-Shawarmeh, both 20, in their hometown of al-Qubieba, north of Jerusalem, as well as that of Khaled Taqatqa, 21, in his hometown of Beit Fajjar near Bethlehem.
It is worth noting in this regard that both Shwamreh and Amr were killed in mid February after they carried out a shooting attack in Damascus Gate area in Jerusalem, whereas Taqatqa was killed on February 19th during clashes with Israeli forces to the south of Bethlehem.
The dailies also highlighted mass protest of Palestinian public teachers in front of the Council of Ministers in Ramallah to demand better wages and employment rights.
The three dailies reported that thousands of teachers demonstrated in front of the Council of Ministers despite security services’ measures to prevent them and that they continued their strike.
Highlighting the Council of Ministers’ response to teachers’ demands, al-Quds and al-Ayyam reported that the Council of Minister renewed commitment to implement the previous agreement by next month and appealed to teachers to return to work.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that Sweden announced an increase in its annual contribution to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine (UNRWA) budget to $40.6 million.
Al-Quds reported lawyers representing the Palestinian Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs’ Committee decided to boycott Israeli military courts of Ofer and Salem in solidarity with hunger-striking detainee Mohammed al-Qiq, whose health condition has further deteriorated.
Highlighting rising tensions at Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque compound, known to Jews as Temple Mount, al-Quds reported that a Jewish movement filmed a movie at the Umayyad Palaces area and that another group held a music performance at the southern wall of the Qibli Mosque.
Finally, al-Quds highlighted a joint investigation carried out by B’Tselem and HaMoked Israeli rights groups into systematic violations against Palestinian detainees in Israel’s Shikma prison.
