Israeli Soldiers Assault Four Prisoners upon Release

RAMALLAH, January 25, 2016 (WAFA) – Israeli soldiers on Sunday evening assaulted and beat up four former Palestinian detainees, just after they were released near Salem military complex, northwest of Jenin, according to the Detainees and Ex-Detainees Commission.

The commission said that soldiers assaulted the four prisoners without justification, causing them bruises across their bodies. Two of the prisoners were identified as Ahmad Abu Zaid, 23, and Mohammad Odeh, 18.

According to Israeli human rights organization B’Tselem, violence against Palestinians by Israeli security forces is not new. It said, “With the outbreak of the al-Aqsa intifada, however, a significant increase in the number of beatings and instances of abuse has occurred, in part because of increased friction between Palestinians and Israeli security forces.”

Based on many testimonies obtained by B‘Tselem and other human rights organizations, security forces use violence, at times gross violence, against Palestinians unnecessarily and without justification.

“Most cases involve a "small dose" of ill-treatment such as a slap, a kick, an insult, a pointless delay at checkpoints, or degrading treatment. These acts have become an integral part of Palestinian life in the Occupied Territories. From time to time, however, cases of severe brutality occur.”
