RAMALLAH, December 31, 2015 (WAFA) – The funeral procession of
Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in October and the Wall Street Journal’s
report about US eavesdropping on Israel hit the front page headlines in
Palestinian dailies.
Highlighting the funeral procession in its main front page news
item, al-Quds reported that two Palestinians killed by Israeli forces in
October were laid to their rest in the Jerusalem town of Abu Dis and the Hebron
town of Yatta.
The two Palestinians were identified as Mazin Hasan Ureiba, 37,
from Abu Dis and Eiad Id‘ies from Hebron.
It is worth noting in this regard that Id‘ies was shot dead after
he allegedly stabbed an Israeli soldier using a screwdriver in Hebron on
December 24th. Ureiba was shot dead near Hizma on December 3rd, after he
allegedly opened fire on Israeli forces, injuring two.
Highlighting the funeral procession of a third Palestinian, al-Hayat
al-Jadida reported in this regard that Baseem Salah was laid to his rest,
noting that he was beaten up and his body was frozen at a temperature of -50
Celsius degree.
Salah was shot dead on November 30th, after an attack
that left an Israeli police wounded.
Al-Quds reported that Israeli forces stormed the family houses of
two other Palestinians shot dead during the last two months in Nablus and
Salfit village of Kafr Ad-Dik.
Furthermore, the three dailies highlighted the Wall Street
Journal’s report about US eavesdropping on Israel.
Al-Quds reported that the US eavesdropped on Netanyahu’s phone
calls following an order made by US President Barack Obama himself during
nuclear negotiations with Iran, and noted that the eavesdropping received
congressional support.
Al-Ayyam reported in this regard that Israel seeks to contain the
repercussions of the Wall Street Journal’s report, while al-Hayat al-Jadida
reported on Israeli Energy Minister Yuval Steinitz as saying: “I didn’t fall
off my chair from the Wall Street Journal report.”
Furthermore, the three dailies reported that an Israeli settler from the illegal settlement of Kiryat Arba‘ in Hebron, succumbed to wounds he sustained
on December 7th, after being stabbed by a Palestinian near the
Ibrahimi Mosque.
The settler was identified as Genady Kofman, 41.
Al-Ayyam
and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted remarks made by Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu following Kofman’s death.
He
was reported as vowing that al-Ibrahimi mosque in Hebron would remain under the
Israeli control forever.
The
three dailies also highlighted President Mahmoud Abbas’ visit to Saudi Arabia.
Abbas
reportedly discussed the latest developments with the Saudi monarch, who
reaffirmed his firm support for Palestinian rights.
Abbas
also reportedly bestowed upon the Saudi monarch the Grand Medal of the Order of
the State of Palestine.
Following
reports that the
Israeli Housing Ministry plans to build over 55,000 illegal settler units in
the West Bank, including building in E1 zone, between the West Bank settlement
bloc of Ma‘aleh Admumim and East Jerusalem, Israeli government was reported in
al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida as denying any settlement construction plans in
E1.
Citing a
Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics’ report, al-Quds and al-Hayat
al-Jadida reported that the projected number of Palestinians in the world is
12,37 million, including 4.75 Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.
Al-Ayyam said
that Israeli state prosecutor would charge the main suspect in the deadly arson
attack of Palestinian Dawabsha family in Duma with murder.
Highlighting a
UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) report, al-Ayyam
reported that Israeli forces killed 170 Palestinians, shot and injured 15,377
others and demolished 539 Palestinian houses in 2015.
