Newspaper Review: French Peace Initiative is not on Israel’s Agenda as Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, July 7, 2015 (WAFA) – Al-Quds and al-Ayyam dailies focused in their Tuesday issue on remarks made by a senior Israeli official, speaking on condition of anonymity, who said that the French initiative for peace in the region is no longer on Israel’s agenda.

The French peace initiative calls for promoting a United Nations Security Council resolution attempting to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

To be noted, Netanyahu strongly lashed out at France’s call to resume peace talks, saying that the plan was a “dictate” that would hurt Israel’s security.

Meanwhile, al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted President Mahmoud Abbas’ as affirming the crucial role of Europe for peacemaking in the Middle East.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Ayyam highlighted remarks made by Egyptian President Abdul-Fattah el-Sisi, in which he said that resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict would contribute to the reinforcement of stability and security in the region.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israeli police on Monday raided the East Jerusalem homes of Gassan Abu Jamal and Mutaz Hejazi, who were killed by Israeli police after being involved in two separate attacks on Israeli targets in Jerusalem in late 2014.

Al-Ayyam said that Yair Lapid, former Israeli Finance Minister, asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to resign from his post if a nuclear deal with Iran is signed.

It said that Israeli “Defense” Minister Moshe Ya’alon has for the first time admitted that a number of Israeli soldiers were taken captive by Palestinian resistance groups during the Israeli 2014 summer aggression on Gaza, vowing to  bring them back to their families.

It said that, according to Israel Channel 10, the Israeli army believes that time has come for a 10-year truce with Gaza’s Hamas Movement.
