RAMALLAH, July 4, 2015 (WAFA) – The killing of a Palestinian
teenager by a senior Israeli commander Friday morning near Qalandiya checkpoint together
with the vote by United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) to adopt a
resolution denouncing Israeli war crimes during the 2014 onslaught on the Gaza
Strip hit the front page headlines in Palestinian dailies.
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted the killing of
teenager Muhammad al-Kasabah, 17, near Qalandia checkpoint as the main front
page news article.
Al-Quds reported that thousands of Palestinians attended
al-Kasabah’s funeral procession and that the UN, namely UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nickolay
Mladenov, condemned the al-Kasbah’s killing by Israeli forces.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida reported in this regard
that al-Kasbah was the third son in his family to be killed; two of his
brothers were killed by Israeli forces during the Second Intifada; [the
Palestinian uprising against Israel, also known as al-Aqsa Intifada.]
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida further reported that
al-Kasabah was shot dead by senior Israeli Brigade Commander, Israel Shomer,
while he attempted to climb the separation wall to enter Jerusalem and pray at
Al-Aqsa Mosque compound [for the third Friday prayer of Ramadan].
According to media sources, Israeli forces didn’t attend to
al-Kasaba and left him to bleed until a group of Palestinians transferred him
to a hospital, where he succumbed to his serious wounds despite doctors
attempts to save his life; [al-Kasaba was shot several times, including in the
upper body.]
During the month of Ramadan on Fridays, Israeli authorities only
allows men and women over the age of 50 to enter Jerusalem without entry
permits. To be noted, Palestinians are often denied permits to enter the city,
forcing many Palestinians, particularly youth, to look for alternative ways to
enter in order to pray at al-Aqsa mosque.
The three dailies printed photos featuring thousands of
Palestinians attending al-Ksabah’s funeral procession.
Moreover, the dailies covered UNHRC’s vote to adopt a
resolution on last summer’s Israeli onslaught on Gaza.
Both al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the UNHRC
has called for the prosecution of everyone responsible for committing war
crimes in Gaza.
Al-Ayyam added in this regard that an overwhelming majority
voted in favor of the resolution, while the United States was the only country
that voted against.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida added in this regard that
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the vote.
Covering the same issue, al-Quds reported that the UNHRC has
voted in favor of the resolution submitted by Palestine under the title
‘Ensuring Accountability and Justice for all
Violations of International Law in the Occupied Palestinian Territory,
including East Jerusalem.’
Al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported
that Israeli forces quelled Friday weekly marches commemorating the first
anniversary of teenager Muhammad Abu Khudair, who was
abducted and burned to death by Israeli settlers on July 2, 2014.
The three dailies also reported that over 200,000 Muslim
worshipers marked the third Friday of Ramadan at the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in
East Jerusalem. Al-Quds added that a total of 20,000 worshipers also marked the
third Friday of Ramadan in the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron, also known as the
Cave of the Patriarchs.
In the wake of latest attacks against Egyptian army in
Egypt’s northern Sinai Peninsula, which claimed the lives of at least 70
soldiers, al-Quds quoted senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouq as saying:
“These attacks undermine our security and we maintain strong relation with
Egypt.”
Al-Ayyam reported Hamas as dismissing Israeli accusations of
having been involved in these attacks.
It further reported that Yehuda Glick, whom it described as
‘one of the most extremist rabbis in Israel, was hosted in a Ramadan Iftar in
Turkey.
It reported that Palestinian security forces have detained
dozens of Hamas affiliates across the West Bank.
It quoted Spokesperson for Palestinian Security Forces major
general ‘Adnan Ad-Damiri as saying: “We will not allow anyone to provoke chaos
in the West Bank.”
