RAMALLAH,
June 29, 2015 (WAFA) – News that Palestinian political detainee Khader Adnan
has ended his 55-day long hunger strike after reaching a deal with Israeli
authorities together with Israeli preparations to intercept the Freedom
Flotilla III, bound for Gaza to break the Israeli siege, hit the main front
page headlines in Palestinian dailies.
Al-Quds
and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Khader Adnan’s ending of his hunger strike,
which he launched in an attempt to end his illegal detention without charge or
trial, as their main front page news item.
Al-Quds
reported that President Mahmoud Abbas himself has exerted pressures in order to
secure Adnan’s release and that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad movement has
warned Israel it would ‘pay the price’ if Adnan dies.
Al-Hayat
al-Jadida reported in this regard that a deal, that saw Adnan ending his hunger
strike, has been reached ]with Israeli authorities[, noting that Adnan would be released on July 12. The newspaper
introduced the news with a heading reading: “]Khader Adnan's[ will has triumphed”.
Al-Ayyam
reported in this regard that Adnan insisted on receiving a written pledge insuring
that he will be released and never be held again under administrative
detention.
While
al-Quds and al-Hayat al-Jadida highlighted Khader Adnan’s issue in their front
page news article, al-Ayyam opted to cover intercepting Gaza-bound Freedom
Flotilla III.
It reported that Israel has taken preparations in order to intercept the Gaza-bound Freedom Flotilla on Monday and prevent it from reaching its destination.
Al-Quds
reported in this regard an Israeli ‘security’ source as saying that Israeli
naval forces would deal with the Freedom Flotilla III just as it dealt with
2010 Marmara Flotilla.
In
the aftermath of the 5.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Egypt on Saturday and
was felt across the region, al-Quds reported Israeli experts as warning that a
real earthquake is expected to strike the Middle East region during the few
coming years.
Al-Hayat
al-Jadida also reported experts as warning that should an earthquake strike,
70% of homes would collapse.
Covering
Israeli forces and settlers’ practices across the occupied Palestinian
Territories (oPT), al-Quds said Israeli forces’ leveled Palestinian
land for the construction of settlement units in Israeli settlements, built on Salfit land.
It
also reported that Israeli forces broke into homes belonging to the families of
Ghassan and Uday Abu Jamal, two Palestinians
who were shot dead by Israeli police after attacking a Jerusalem
synagogue in November 2014.
Al-Ayyam
reported that clashes broke out in several East Jerusalem neighborhoods and
that a Palestinian woman was detained by Israeli forces as Muslim female
worshipers confronted Israeli settlers who forced their way into the Al-Aqsa
Mosque compound.
Al-Quds
and al-Ayyam reported that Israeli real estate agents have forged the sale of
Palestinian property in an East Jerusalem settlement.
Al-Quds
reported that Fatah Central Committee member ‘Azzam al-Ahmad has discussed the
intra-Palestinian reconciliation and the formation of national consensus
government with Egyptian officials in Cairo.
With
regards to the formation of new Palestinian government, al-Ayyam reported that
Abbas has set Tuesday morning as a deadline for Hamas to agree on the formation
of the government.
Highlighting
Israeli Foreign Ministry Director-General Dore Gold’s trip to Cairo, al-Quds
and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the Israeli official discussed ways to
revive Palestinian-Israeli talks.
