RAMALLAH, June 16, 2015 (WAFA) – The reopening of dozens of
Palestinian stores that were closed by Israel under a military order for 21
years in the old city of Hebron together with reports about a Qatari-drawn
proposal for a long-term clam between Gaza and Israel were featured as the main
news articles in the three Arabic Palestinian dailies.
Covering the reopening of Hebron stores in one of their front page
news items, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the city of Hebron
celebrated the reopening of 70 stores in Sahla Street, which were closed over
the past 21 years in the wake of the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre in 1994.
Al-Quds reported that senior Hamas official Mousa Abu Marzouq has
left the Gaza Strip to the Qatari capital, Doha, where he is scheduled to
discuss with Hamas chief Khaled Mashal reaching a clam deal with Israel.
This issue also hit the front page headlines of al-Ayyam. The daily
reported on several sources confirming that a long-term calm deal between
Israel and Hamas is expected to be accomplished.
Al-Quds highlighted in its main front page news item that
Presidential Advisor for Economic Affairs Mohammad Mustafa has launched a
preliminary initiative in order to reinforce and support the economic and
political paths and enhance the prospects of independence.
It is worth noting that this initiative was lunched as part of an
economic conference jointly held by the Palestine Economic Policy Research
Institute (MAS) and the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy
(KIEP).
Reporting on the religious tourism conference that was organized by
the United Nations
World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the West Bank city of Bethlehem, al-Quds
quoted Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah addressing the attendees: “Israel has been
targeting our ]Palestinian[ historical, religious and archeological
sites and preventing us from rehabilitating them.”
Al-Quds also
reported that [over 250[ olive
saplings were uprooted and an agricultural structure was demolished by Israeli
forces in the Bethlehem village of Husan.
Slamming the call made by President Mahmoud Abbas during the 25th
African Union Summit in Johannesburg, urging state leaders to advocate labeling
of Israeli settlements’ products, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was
reported in al-Ayyam as claiming that Abbas’ call is not a language of peace.
Covering the joint Arab and French efforts to submit a UN Security
Council draft resolution setting a deadline for ending Israeli occupation and
establishing independent Palestinian state, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida
reported that Arab League’s Ministerial Committee is scheduled to meet with
French Foreign Minister Laurent
Fabius to discuss the draft resolution to be submitted to the UNSC.
Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida reported that the UN’s
Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Makarim Wibisono, was barred entry into the
occupied Palestinian Territories by Israel. This news item hit the front page
headlines in al-Hayat al-Jadida.
Al-Ayyam reported on UNRWA as announcing that it plans to
construct 6,000 homes in Gaza during the next two years and cover rent payments
at the beginning of the Muslims’ fasting month of Ramadan.
Both newspapers reported that a Palestinian home was
demolished for the second time and the homeowner was detained by Israeli
authorities, sparking clashes in Kafr Kanna village.
