Newspaper Review: UN Official’s Call for Reconstruction of Gaza Focus of Dailies

RAMALLAH, February 19, 2015 (WAFA) – The three Palestinian Arabic dailies focused Thursday on remarks made by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Jeffrey Feltman, who called upon the donor countries to meet their commitments pledged during the Cairo-based Gaza Reconstruction conference last October.

Al-Ayyam said Feltman added that shortage of funds needed for the reconstruction of battered Gaza could spark a new round of fighting between Israel and Hamas.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida also said that Feltman demanded that Israel releases the Palestinian tax revenues, collected on behalf of the Palestinian Authority – now withheld for the second month in a row.

Al-Quds and al-Hayat said Palestinian peaceful resistance activists have re-built a camp near Jerusalem which has been demolished nine times by Israeli Border Police. The camp was first set up on February 3 to protest Israeli plans to annex the area to the nearby settlement Ma’ale Adomim.

On a different subject, al-Quds quoted a report saying that only 20,000 people are now currently residing in the besieged al-Yarmouk refugee camp near Damascus, which had a population of about 1 million before the outbreak of the Syrian regime’s crackdown on dissent in 2011.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat said the Supreme Court of Israel annulled a decision by the Israeli Central Election Committee to prevent Hanin al-Zoabi, an Arab member of the Knesset, from running for the upcoming Israeli elections.

Al-Ayyam said Jewish extremists sprayed anti-Arab graffiti in the city of Baqa al-Garbiya, an Arab city in Israel.
