RAMALLAH,
May 31, 2014 – (WAFA) – President Mahmoud Abbas phoned Saturday Egypt’s
President-elect Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi for
his landslide victory in Egyptian presidential elections.
Abbas
considered that al-Sisi’s victory constitutes support for Palestine and
leverage for the Arab Nation, hoping that prosperity and security will prevail
in Egypt and commending Egypt’s leading role in supporting the Palestinian
cause and bringing about the intra-Palestinian reconciliation.
Abbas
stated: “The election of al-Sisi demonstrates the Egyptian people’s will to
support the Palestinian cause. A strong, stable and prosperous Egypt will
render the Arab nation more capable of meeting big challenges and help the
Palestinian people achieve its national goals and establish the independent
Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.”
Abbas
and al-Sisi agreed to hold a meeting in the near future to coordinate their
positions and reinforce the historical Palestinian Egyptian relations.
Meanwhile,
Abbas received Saturday a delegation from the residents of Burin, a village
located to the south of Nablus, at the presidential headquarters in Ramallah.
Abbas
was briefed about Burin residents’ suffering as a result of the aggressive
settlement campaign and Israeli settlers’ attacks they are subjected to.
Zuhair
al-Khatib, a representative of Burin residents, said that their meeting with
Abbas was very constructive and productive as Abbas stressed that he stands by
the residents against the Israeli settlers’ attacks and pledged to offer them
all necessary support.
