UNRWA: U.S.-backed Gaza aid mechanism failing to meet urgent needs

GAZA, June 2, 2025 (WAFA) –  The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) warned on Monday that the current U.S.-backed aid distribution system, implemented with Israeli coordination, is falling short of meeting the urgent humanitarian needs in the Gaza Strip.

In an official statement, UNRWA called for safe and direct access to deliver humanitarian assistance to Palestinians facing worsening famine conditions since early March.

“During the ceasefire, the United Nations demonstrated it has the capacity to deliver aid safely and at scale, reaching people wherever they are,” said Sam Rose, UNRWA’s Director of Affairs in Gaza.

Rose emphasized that the current aid delivery methods are inadequate, especially for vulnerable populations such as the sick, injured, and elderly. “The current distribution methods do not meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza,” he stated.

He added that UNRWA is leading the world’s largest ongoing UN food distribution operation, noting that while supplies are available and ready, access remains the critical barrier. “We have no time to waste,” he warned.

UNRWA’s appeal comes as humanitarian organizations continue to report catastrophic conditions across the enclave, with widespread hunger, limited medical care, and the collapse of basic infrastructure amid continued Israeli military operations.
