Vice President al-Sheikh receives Journalists’ Syndicate delegation, discusses elections and press freedom

RAMALLAH, August 22, 2026 (WAFA) — Vice President of the State of Palestine Hussein al-Sheikh on Saturday received a delegation from the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS), along with a group of journalists, media professionals, and influencers, in the presence of PJS President Nasser Abu Baker.

The meeting focused on the latest political, economic, and security developments, as well as developments related to the Palestinian cause, including preparations for the upcoming general elections.

Al-Sheikh reviewed the latest political and on-the-ground developments in Palestine and the wider region. He stressed the importance of preparing for upcoming national milestones—foremost among them the elections—to strengthen national democratic participation and safeguard Palestinian national interests.

He also addressed Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip and the widespread humanitarian suffering it has caused, alongside the escalating colonist attacks in the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and the accompanying violations targeting the Palestinian people, their land, and resources. He emphasized the importance of continuing political, diplomatic, and media efforts to confront these policies, protect Palestinian national rights, and expose the occupation’s violations against civilians and international humanitarian law.

He affirmed that press freedom and journalistic work are fundamental pillars of Palestinian national life, emphasizing the vital role of journalists and media professionals in reporting the truth, documenting violations, and conveying the Palestinian narrative to the world.

Al-Sheikh commended the sacrifices made by Palestinian journalists throughout their professional and national careers, as well as their contributions to advancing the Palestinian cause. He said Palestinian media “has been and will remain an essential partner in defending national rights and strengthening the presence of the Palestinian narrative at the regional and international levels.”

The delegation, for its part, briefed Al-Sheikh on the state of journalism in Palestine, the latest violations and attacks targeting journalists and media institutions, as well as preparations by local and international media organizations operating in Palestine to cover the upcoming electoral process.

The delegation also discussed the needs of the media sector to ensure professional, comprehensive, and effective coverage throughout all stages of the electoral process.
