Egypt reach World Cup round of 16 for first time after penalty shootout victory over Australia

RAMALLAH, July 4 , 2026 (WAFA) –  The Egyptian national team qualified for the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday night after defeating Australia 4-2 in a penalty shootout, following a 1-1 draw after regulation and extra time.

Egypt opened the scoring through Emam Ashour in the 13th minute, while Australia equalized in the 55th minute with an own goal by Egyptian player Mohamed Hany.

In the penalty shootout, Egypt converted all of their penalties, securing a 4-2 victory over Australia. Egypt will now face the winner of the Argentina vs. Cape Verde match.

The victory marks the first time in the Egyptian national team's history that it has advanced to the World Cup Round of 16.
