RAMALLAH, May 14, 2026 (WAFA) – German Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Gies emphasized the need for an investigation into the information revealed in a New York Times report concerning the sexual violence and abuse against Palestinian detainees inside Israeli prisons.
In press remarks late Wednesday,, Gies said, "In principle, the German government condemns sexual violence in all its forms."
He added, "We don't have our own findings regarding the cases mentioned in the report. But what's important now is to investigate these allegations and hold the perpetrators accountable."
Responding to a question on whether Germany would support independent organizations seeking access to Israeli prisons to investigate the claims, Giese said Germany has consistently worked to enable the International Committee of the Red Cross to access Palestinian detainees.
Human Rights Watch announced on Wednesday that the information revealed in a report by New York Times correspondent Nicholas Kristof regarding the sexual violence and rape of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails was consistent with the findings of the international human rights organization's previous investigations.
Last January, the Israeli human rights organization B'Tselem published a report detailing abuses in Israeli security prisons, citing testimonies of violence by prison guards, soldiers, and Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) personnel, including sexual violence.
The report, based on interviews with released prisoners, included accounts from four former prisoners describing a dangerous pattern of sexual violence. This included forced stripping of clothing, severe beatings of the genitals causing serious injuries, attacks involving dogs, and forced invasive acts with objects.
