UN chief warns of devastating consequences of Middle East war

NEW YORK, April 2, 2026 (WAFA) – United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday warned of the far-reaching consequences of the ongoing war in the Middle East, describing it as leading to widespread destruction.

Speaking to the press at UN headquarters, Guterres said the world is “on the brink of a wider war that could sweep across the Middle East, causing enormous global repercussions,” noting that the effects are already being felt worldwide.

He highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis, stating that “when the Strait of Hormuz is choked, the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations struggle to breathe.”

Guterres pointed to the growing destruction, indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, and the rising costs of food and energy affecting communities around the world.

“Many aspects of this conflict are uncertain,” he said, “but one thing is clear: if the drums of war continue to beat, escalation will only worsen all these situations. This cycle of death and destruction must stop.”

He emphasized the need to respect and protect civilians and civilian infrastructure, including nuclear facilities, maintain freedom of navigation, including through the Strait of Hormuz, and allow ongoing diplomatic efforts to pursue a peaceful path forward.

Guterres also stressed the importance of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all UN member states and confirmed that he is in close contact with relevant parties.
