UN: More than 9 million displaced and 21 million facing acute food insecurity in Sudan

KHARTOUM, January 10, 2026 (WAFA) — About 9.3 million people in Sudan remain internally displaced, while more than 4.3 million have fled across borders, placing enormous pressure on neighboring countries, according to the latest United Nations data show.

UN agencies reiterated the grim reality as Sudan marks 1,000 days of turmoil, describing the situation as encompassing the world’s largest hunger crisis, the largest ongoing displacement emergency, and a devastating toll of killed, injured and permanently disabled civilians.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that Sudan has descended into one of the worst humanitarian crises of this century, with more than 21 million people suffering from acute food insecurity.
