Iraqi former president Barham Salih elected UN High Commissioner for Refugees

NEW YORK, December 19, 2025 (WAFA) — The United Nations General Assembly elected former Iraqi President Barham Salih as the new United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, succeeding Italian Filippo Grandi.

Salih’s five-year term will begin on January 1, 2026, and end on December 31, 2030.

He will succeed Grandi, who received deep gratitude from the UN Secretary-General for his leadership and tireless efforts in protecting refugees, displaced persons, and stateless individuals.

UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock and UN Secretary-General António Guterres congratulated Salih on his election as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
