Systematic abuse and neglect in Israeli prisons: hunger, disease, and brutality reported

RAMALLAH, July 27, 2025 (WAFA) – The Palestinian Commission for Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs has released a report detailing ongoing human rights violations against Palestinian prisoners in Israeli detention centers.

The report, published Sunday, reveals testimonies from inmates that indicate a systematic campaign of violence, starvation, and severe medical neglect inside the prisons.

According to the Commission, the Israeli prison administration continues to commit systematic abuses against over 10,000 detainees, including women and children. These violations include physical assault, psychological abuse, deprivation of basic needs, and denial of medical treatment.

One particularly troubling case is that of Bilal Amro, a detainee from the town of Dura near Hebron, currently held in Ofer Prison. Amro suffers from intense back and leg pain due to metal implants and has repeatedly requested pain relief medication. He is also suffering from severe vision problems, yet no appropriate care has been provided.

Another prisoner, Alaa Al-Adam from Beit Ula near Hebron, is enduring extreme discomfort due to a skin condition causing severe itching around the thighs. Despite visible symptoms, he has not received the necessary medical treatment.

In the Naqab Prison, the case of Hassan Imad Abu Hassan, from the town of Al-Yamoun near Jenin, stands evidence of the spread of contagious diseases within Israeli detention centers. Abu Hassan has been battling scabies for over three months after being forced to sleep on a contaminated bed in Megiddo Prison upon his detention.

Although he eventually received ointment that led to some improvement, the situation took a turn for the worse when prison suppression units raided his cell. During the raid, they confiscated his medication and assaulted him without justification.
