DUBLIN, March 18, 2025 (WAFA) - Sinn Féin spokesperson on Foreign Affairs, Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire, has condemned last night’s Israeli attacks on Gaza, which has killed hundreds, and described them as an appalling breach of the ceasefire.
Ó Laoghaire said: “The Israeli government has once again broken the ceasefire in the most appalling way, with air strikes that targeted refugee camps and other civilian locations, leading to the deaths of hundreds of people, including many children.
“This is yet another profound breach by Israel, not only of the ceasefire, but of humanitarian norms," he said. "Gaza has been reduced to rubble, and is being denied access to aid and electricity."
“The humanitarian situation there is already desperate, but to see the large-scale raining down of terror from the air on top of this is yet another extremely serious escalation of an out-of-control Israeli regime.
“The Israeli Government must reinstate that ceasefire, and the international community, including Ireland, must ensure that all pressure is exerted," Ó Laoghaire urged.
“Israel simply cannot simply be allowed to flout international and humanitarian rules and laws."
Ó Laoghaire called to impose sanctions on Israel, and said Irish government must play a part in that.
“The failure to hold Israel has emboldened Benjamin Netanyahu and allowed his regime to act with impunity. To achieve and build a lasting peace, there must be sanctions for Israel’s war crimes, at European level and here in Ireland. The Irish Government must play its part by passing the Occupied Territories Bill without any further delay and adopting other sanctions against Israel."
“Sinn Féin, along with the other parties of opposition, will continue to exert maximum pressure on the government to ensure that they do so," Ó Laoghaire concluded.
