Completion of three Japan-funded projects in Bethlehem Governorate

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, August 28, 2024 (WAFA) - Nakashima Yoichi, Ambassador for Palestinian Affairs and Representative of Japan to Palestine, visited Al-Khas village and Dheisha refugee camp in Bethlehem governorate to celebrate the completion of projects funded by the Government of Japan through Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

The Government of Japan extended a grant of $89,441 to the Local Committee for Rehabilitation of Disabled to enhance the educational environment for children at the Center for Rehabilitation of Handicapped Children in Dheisha Refugee Camp. Approximately 420 people will benefit from the project.

Additionally, a grant of $90,300 was provided to Al-Khas Village Council to enhance medical services at the Aknaf Beit Al Maqdes Charitable Society Medical Center by introducing an X-ray unit and a Hermon test unit. This project has directly benefited around 700 people monthly by improving access to essential medical services.

Moreover, the Government of Japan granted $89,550 to the SAMED Agricultural Society for Wall Affected, improving access to electricity by installing solar panel systems in Abu Qatt and Al Maqathi Bedouin communities in Bethlehem. Upon the project's completion, 440 people in those communities benefited directly, leading to increased dairy production.

In his speech, Nakashima emphasized Japan’s firm commitment to supporting Palestinian people from a human security perspective and the importance of implementing social and economic development projects needed for Palestinian communities.

Since 1993, Japan has extended its official development assistance to the Palestinians to approximately $2.5 billion. GGP projects have been formulated in collaboration with the Palestinian Authority since 2010.
