Newspapers Review: Israeli plans to expand settlements in the occupied territories highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Tuesday, June 13, 2023 (WAFA) – Israel's plans to build thousands of housing units in its illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The main front-page story headline in al-Quds daily said Israel decided to expand two settlements in occupied Jerusalem and informed Washington of its intention to build 4,000 housing units in the West Bank settlements.

The other two dailies, al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida, had more or less the same headline as al-Quds.

Al-Quds said the Palestinian Authority has condemned these plans, while al-Ayyam said the Foreign Ministry has also condemned them saying this is a test for the positions of the US administration, which has expressed concern about these plans, according to al-Ayyam.

The dailies also highlighted settler violence against Palestinian civilians, as well as Israeli army incursions into the Palestinian areas leaving behind injuries and damage.

Al-Quds quoted the Israeli human rights organization, B’Tselem, saying that settler violence against Palestinians is a result of government protection and support through its army.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida quoted a European Union human rights official telling the Israeli daily Haaretz that the Israeli government ignores the settler violence.

Al-Ayyam said that the settler groups want an open decision to expel the Sub Laban family from its house in Jerusalem’s Old City so that they can take it over and said that the Israeli police are practicing psychological warfare against the Palestinian at orders from the racist cabinet minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

It also said the US wants to return to UNESCO after withdrawing from it because of Palestine.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the cabinet decided to bolster the work of the Hebron Reconstruction Committee.

It also said the prisoners, in a protest move, have decided to partially shut down their sections today.

It said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh called for an active European role to oblige Israel to honor the signed agreements.
