RAMALLAH, Saturday, May 20, 2023 (WAFA) – News about the Arab summit in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, dominated the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.
While al-Ayyam daily said the Jeddah summit reiterated the centrality of the Palestinian cause and adhering to the Arab Peace Initiative to achieve peace, al-Hayat al-Jadida daily highlighted the speech of President Mahmoud Abbas at the summit in which he called on the Arab countries to present written requisitions to the International Court of Justice in order for the court to issue an advisory opinion on the legal status of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.
The third daily, al-Quds, highlighted the remarks of the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammad bin Salman in which he stressed that Palestine is the fundamental cause for the Arabs and Muslims.
The three papers reported on the various statements of the Arab leaders at the summit and on its final communique, as well as on the attendance of the Ukrainian president of the summit and the return of Syria to the Arab fold for the first time in more than a decade.
In other front-page news, al-Ayyam said France, the United Nations, Germany and the United States condemned the “death to Arabs” calls made by Israelis during the flags march in Jerusalem on Thursday.
It also quoted Peace Now movement saying Israel plans to build 615 new housing units in West Bank settlements.
It said Washington said that settlements are an obstacle to peace and called on Israel not to allow the return of settlers to the evacuated settlement of Homesh in the north of the West Bank.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said the International Federation of Journalists expressed solidarity with the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate and called for holding its general conference.
It said UNESCO held for the first time an event at its Paris headquarters on the 1948 Palestinian Nakba.
It said several people were hurt in confrontations with Israeli soldiers in the West Bank.
Al-Quds said that hundreds of Jewish settlers stormed areas in the vicinity of Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem during the weekly Muslim Friday prayers and attacked worshippers.
