Newspapers Review: Confrontations, commemoration of the Nakba anniversary focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Monday, May 15, 2023 (WAFA) – The confrontations between Palestinians and Israeli soldiers in the occupied territories as well as plans to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe) were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Ayyam and al-Quds dailies highlighted the confrontations, mainly in Nablus, and said many were injured from army gunfire and tear gas. They also said settlers damaged trees and attacked herders.

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, highlighted the Nakba commemoration events and said that the United Nations is going for the first time since 1948 to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Palestinian dispossession, dispersion, and loss of their homeland.

The other two dailies also highlighted this event on their front page.

Al-Quds said the Israeli High Court ordered the Sub Laban family in Jerusalem’s Old City to evacuate their home and turn it over to Jewish settlers. The United Nations said this amounts to a war crime, explained the paper.

Reports about the return to normal life in the Gaza Strip following five days of Israeli airstrikes were also highlighted on the front page of the dailies despite the heavy destruction to homes and property and deaths caused by the attacks.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said President Abbas welcomed Egypt’s efforts in bringing about a ceasefire that ended the aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Al-Ayyam said the ceasefire holds despite the breaches and life is gradually and slowly returning to normal in the Gaza Strip.

Al-Quds said that a projectile was fired from Gaza yesterday and in return, Israel bombed posts for the resistance.

It said a rights organization petitioned the High Court demanding the return of money collected by the so-called Civil Administration from Palestinians as bail that amounted to more than $13 million and described keeping the money as robbery.
