TUBAS, Saturday, February 11, 2023 (WAFA) – The death of Palestinian freedom fighter in Israeli jails, Ahmad Abu Ali, due to medical negligence drew widespread protests in the occupied territories and charges of war crimes.
Dozens of Palestinians held a protest in Tubas, in the north of the occupied territories, denouncing Israel’s policy of medical negligence against Palestinian prisoners that so far led to the death of 75 freedom fighters since the start of the occupation in 1967.
Abu Ali, 48, from the town of Yatta in the south of the West Bank, died on Friday at an Israeli hospital where he was taken following a serious deterioration in his health only a year before he was supposed to end his 12-year-sentence.
The Palestinian Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission held the Israel Prison Services responsible for Abu Ali’s death for not providing him with the proper medical attention during his incarceration despite his bad health condition, including heart problems, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
Tubas governor, Ahmad al-Assad, said at the protest that Israel targets the prisoners with its medical negligence policy that leads to the slow death of the prisoners, calling on the international community to intervene to force Israel to stop this policy.
Mayor of Tubas Husam Daraghme said what happens in the prisons is considered a war crime due to its violation of international law.
