RAMALLAH, Tuesday, February 7, 2023 (WAFA) – News about the five Palestinians who were shot dead by the Israeli military early Monday in Aqbat Jabr refugee camp, in the occupied West Bank city of Jericho, hit the front pages of the three Arabic Palestinian dailies on Tuesday.
Al-Ayyam, al-Hayat al-Jadida and al-Quds said that a sizable Israeli force barged its way into the refugee camp, triggering confrontations. The soldiers opened fire toward local young men, killing five, who were later identified as Raafat Wael Aweidat, 21, and his brother Ibrahim Wael Aweidat, 27, Adham Majdi Aweidat, 22, Thayer Aweidat, 28, and Malik Awni Lafi, 22.
The paper added that the bodies of the slain Palestinians were taken by the army.
According to the newspapers, Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh described Israel’s killing of five Palestinians in Jericho earlier today as a major crime and a blatant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, calling on the international community to immediately bring a stop to these crimes.
The dailies said that 4300 people were killed, including 22 Palestinian refugees, and thousands were injured as a result of a massive earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria with a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter scale.
According to the Syrian Ministry of Health, the death toll from the earthquake rose to about 4,365 deaths and 3,411 injuries in Latakia, Aleppo, Hama, and Tartous.
While in Turkey, the Turkish Vice President announced that 2,921 people were killed, more than 14,000 were injured, and thousands of buildings collapsed as a result of the earthquake.
The Palestine Embassy in Damascus said 22 Palestinian refugees, including three children, were killed in the Raml refugee camp in Latakia, and Neirab camp in Aleppo, Syria.
Al-Hayat al-Jadida said that President Mahmoud Abbas has mourned the Palestine refugees killed in the earthquake and sent his condolences to their families. He also instructed the Palestine embassy in Syria to do what is necessary to help the families affected by the earthquake and ordered the dispatch of Palestinian teams to help in the rescue operations.
