Newspapers Review: Israeli army killing of a Palestinian in north of West Bank highlight of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, February 4, 2023 (WAFA) – The Israeli army killing yesterday of a Palestinian at a military checkpoint south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus was highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

Al-Quds daily said in its main front-page story headline that the army killed an unarmed Palestinian at Huwarra checkpoint, while al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida dailies described the killing of 26-year-old Abdallah Samih Qalalweh, from the village of al-Jadida, south of Jenin, as “execution.”

The three papers also reported on the Israeli army suppression of the weekly anti-occupation, anti-settlements protests in different parts of the occupied West Bank and said dozens were injured in the crackdown.

They said the Palestinian leadership held a meeting last night in Ramallah, headed by President Mahmoud Abbas, to discuss the latest developments and further steps to be taken to protect the Palestinian people from Israeli aggression.

They quoted Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh warning of the consequences of the Israeli army crimes in the occupied territories and the daily killing of Palestinians, and they also quoted the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, saying that the recent measures being taken by the far-right Israeli government are only fueling further violations and abuses of human rights.

Al-Quds, in a report taken from the Israeli daily Haaretz, said the Palestinian Authority tied return to security coordination with Israel on ending the Israeli incursions and attacks against the freedom fighters in Israeli jails.

It said that French President Macron called on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their meeting in Paris for restraint in his government’s aggression in the occupied territories and his objection to settlement activities.

It also had a report about incitement against Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, a top Islamic religious figure from Jerusalem, in the Israeli media, mainly in the Hebrew right-wing daily Maariv.

Al-Quds also said Sudan and Israel are on their way to normalizing their relations.

Al-Ayyam daily said the Palestinian flag was hoisted again in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of occupied East Jerusalem “despite the ban from (racist Israeli minister Itamar) Ben Gvir.”

It also said that an Israeli court refused to freeze a decision to evict the Palestinian Shehadeh family from its home in Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem for the benefit of settlers.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said international artists have called on a British art center to end its cooperation with the Israeli embassy in London.

It said American Jewish leaders reject linking anti-Semitism to criticizing Israel.
