Newspapers Review: Israeli army killing of Palestinian in West Bank focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, May 29, 2021 (WAFA) – Two of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today highlighted as their main front-page story the Israeli army killing of a Palestinian man in Beita village, in the north of the West Bank.

Al-Ayyam and al-Hayat al-Jadida dailies said the army killed Zakaria Hamayel, 28, and injured dozens others in different places in the occupied territories during protests against the Israeli occupation and settlement expansion.

The third daily, al-Quds, highlighted interviews with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in which he said that he warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu against attempting to evict Palestinian residents of Sheikh Jarrah from their homes and the tension at Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The paper published several stories related to the aftermath of the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip, including a story that said Blinken and the UN Special Coordinator discussed delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza.

It also printed a picture of Arab member of the Israeli parliament, Ahmad Tibi, visiting Jana Kiswani, the girl shot in the back by an Israeli police officer while in her home in Sheikh Jarrah that caused her spinal damage.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said a million-people demonstration is planned today in Washington against Israel as 600 world musicians signed a letter calling for boycott of Israel and granting Palestinians the right to self-determination.

Al-Ayyam said Israel opposed the opening of the US consulate in Jerusalem and suggested opening it in Abu Dis neighborhood, to the east of the occupied city.

It said the Israeli District Court in Jerusalem postponed a decision on the eviction of Palestinians from their homes in Batn al-Hawa of Silwan neighborhood of East Jerusalem for the benefit of Israeli settlers.
