Newspapers Review: Palestinian man killed by Israelis, Fatah meeting, coronavirus focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Saturday, March 20, 2021 (WAFA) – The Israeli army killing of a Palestinian man in the north of the West Bank and other repressive measures, the meeting of the Fatah Central Committee, and the latest with the coronavirus toll in Palestine and the world were highlighted on the front page of the three Palestinian Arabic dailies published today.

The three papers said Israeli occupation forces shot and killed 48-year-old Atef Yousef Hanayshe during an anti-settlements protest in Beit Dajan village east of Nablus. Hanayshe was shot in the head with a live bullet.

Al-Quds daily, which printed pictures from Beit Dajan of Hanayshe’s funeral and people mourning him, also said that dozens of protesters were hurt in the Israeli army crackdown on the anti-settlements protest in Beit Dajan and several other places in the occupied West Bank.

It said that Palestinians held protests in occupied East Jerusalem against Israeli government takeover and demolition of Palestinian-owned homes in Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods for the benefit of Israeli settlers.

It said the International Criminal Court gave Israel one month to ask for a delay in the opening of an investigation into its war crimes in the occupied territories.

Al-Ayyam daily quoted the United Nations organization, OCHA, saying that Israel demolished or seized 26 Palestinian-owned structures in the past two weeks.

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, highlighted on its front page the Fatah Central Committee meeting and quoted President Mahmoud Abbas, who chaired the meeting held in Ramallah, welcoming the "positive results" of the latest national dialogue held in Cairo.

It said Fatah vowed to continue preparations for the legislative elections planned for May 22 with one list running that will have the support of all its members.

Al-Quds quoted a Hamas official saying that his movement wants one national list with Fatah and the other Palestinian factions to run for the parliament seats.

On the corona pandemic, the three papers said 21 people died yesterday of the disease in Palestine and 1851 new cases were recorded.

Al-Ayyam said 301 new cases were recorded in East Jerusalem over two days, and one death among Palestinians in the diaspora.
