Elections Commission chairman discusses upcoming elections with Palestinian political factions

RAMALLAH, Wednesday, March 03, 2021 (WAFA) - Chairman of the Palestinian Central Elections Commission (CEC), Hanna Nasir, discussed today with the Secretaries-General of Palestinian political factions the latest developments with regards to the upcoming Palestinian elections as well as the nomination conditions for the 2021 legislative elections scheduled on 22 May.

The meeting comes as part of the regular meetings the CEC holds with political parties to keep them updated with electoral procedures, said a CEC press statement issued today.

During the meeting held in Ramallah, Nasir discussed the details of the electoral process beginning with voter registration which ended mid-February and the exhibition and challenge period which will be completed by the end of today.

He explained that nomination for the upcoming legislative elections will commence on 20 March until 31 March and will be based on general elections law No.1 of 2007 and its amendments.

CEC Chairman also briefed Secretaries-General on the content of the letter the CEC addressed today to Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh, in which Nasir expressed his hope for quick consideration and response to the resignation requests submitted by government employees, who receive salaries or allowances from the public treasury and who wish to run for legislative elections.

The meeting also responded to Secretaries-General inquiries with regards to the electoral process and the political circumstances surrounding its conduct and discussed details of the previous and future stages of the electoral process, especially the procedural and legal details related to the nomination.

Faction representatives were also handed over copies of the lists of new registrants for the upcoming elections, in addition to kits containing nomination forms and relevant material.
