Newspapers Review: Death of a woman during an Israeli raid, weather conditions focus of dailies

RAMALLAH, Thursday, February 18, 2021 (WAFA) – The death of an elderly Palestinian woman during an Israeli army raid of her house and the bad weather conditions in Palestine hit the front-page headlines of the Palestinian Arabic dailies.

Al-Quds and al-Ayyam dailies highlighted the weather conditions and said the country was hit by a cold polar front that brought snow to most of Palestine causing damage and road accidents that led to one death in the West Bank.

The third daily, al-Hayat al-Jadida, as well as the other two dailies, highlighted the death of 67-year-old Rahma Abu Ahour of a heart attack she suffered in the aftermath of an Israeli army raid at her brother's house in a village east of Bethlehem in the south of the occupied West Bank.

The papers said Abu Ahour fell unconscious due to fear during the army raid. She was taken to hospital where she was pronounced dead of a heart attack.

Coronavirus toll at home, the region, and the world was also highlighted on the front page of the three dailies, which said that eight people have died and 1432 new cases were recorded in Palestine yesterday.

Al-Ayyam said the first batch of 2000 coronavirus vaccine doses have arrived yesterday in the Gaza Strip after Israel has lifted the ban on them.

The paper also said a prisoners' exchange deal between Syria and Israel was disrupted after Israel refused to release two Syrian prisoners to their homes in the Israeli-occupied Golan, but rather to Syria.

Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh held talks yesterday with the European Union Representative to Palestine during which they discussed Gaza electricity crisis, and with the Norwegian foreign minister, during which they discussed the upcoming donors meeting on Palestine.

Al-Quds said efforts are underway to hold a meeting for the International Quartet on the Middle East at the ministerial level.

It quoted Shtayyeh saying that the influx of young people to register for elections shows keenness to participate in the upcoming elections.

Al-Ayyam quoted the Palestinian Central Elections Commission saying that 93.3 percent of eligible voters have completed the registration by the deadline.
