Abbas to Meet With British PM

LONDON, March 8, 2011 (WAFA) - President Mahmoud Abbas meets with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague Tuesday, in a two day visit to discuss the latest developments in the region and the peace process.

The meeting coincides with British proposals to revive the peace process, after Britain’s unprecedented step of voting for the condemnation of illegal Jewish settlements in the West Bank in the UN Security Council.

This visit also takes place as preparation for the upcoming Quartet meeting in Paris, amid Palestinian demands for the Quartet to issue a strong statement supporting the establishment of a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital, in addition to condemning Israel’s settlement policies and declaring its attempts to create facts on the ground as illegal and illegitimate.

A Palestinian diplomat said the delay of the Quartet meeting may be linked to Netanyahu’s proposal to establish a Palestinian state with flexible borders, which Abbas rejected last week.

The Quartet, made up of the US, EU, Russia and the UN said it will meet in advance and its envoys will meet separately with Palestinian and Israeli negotiators in Brussels.
