TEL AVIV, February 20, 2011 (WAFA) - Israeli political officials in Jerusalem said Sunday that the vote on the anti settlement resolution indicates Israel’s international isolation, according to the web site of Israeli radio.
Economic relations between Israel and Europe may be harmed by the stalemate in the peace process, sources predicted.
14 members of the UN Security Council voted in favor of the anti-settlement resolution before it was vetoed by the United States. Britain, France and Germany had demanded that Israel “immediately stop” all settlement activities in Palestinian territories.
The three countries said they had backed the resolution 'because our views on settlements, including east Jerusalem, are clear: they are illegal under international law, an obstacle to peace, and constitute a threat to a two-state solution. All settlement activity, including in east Jerusalem, should cease immediately,' in a joint statement published by the Guardian newspaper Saturday.
Palestinian observer at the UN, Riyad Mansour, expressed concern that “the message sent today may be one that only encourages further Israeli intransigence and impunity,” according to the Guardian.
